Damascus steel questions and what actually separates forged from printed

Something that comes up a lot when people are shopping Damascus knives
is the printed versus forged question, so I wanted to share what to
actually look for since it gets glossed over in most buying guides.

Real forged Damascus is made by stacking and welding two different
steels, hammering them together, folding the billet, and repeating
until the layers are set. The pattern comes from the boundary between
those steels reacting differently to acid. Because it goes all the
way through the metal, if you grind the bevel down the pattern is
still there.

Printed Damascus is an acid wash or laser etch applied to the surface
of plain steel. It looks identical in photos. The tell is the bevel.
On a printed blade the grind is plain steel. The pattern stops at the
flat and does not carry into the edge at all. Sharpen it a few times
and the pattern near the edge disappears entirely.

Three quick checks before you buy any Damascus knife online. First,
ask the seller which steels were used. A maker who forged it can tell
you. 1084 and 15N20 is the most common combination. If they cannot
name the steels, they did not forge it. Second, ask for a photo of
the tang. The pattern should be visible on the tang even where it
sits under the handle. Third, check the price. Real forged Damascus
takes time. If a knife is under $100 and claiming hand-forged Damascus
it almost certainly is not.
