The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
I had a good many discussions this weekend on internet vs an actual show. I have questions about it, LOL...I know you are surprised!
First let me share my thoughts...it does not need to be one or the other, both can exist and grow.
A show is where you meet the dealers, manufactures and makers. It is where you meet the folks face to face that you talk with or buy from on a regular basis. A show gives you the opportunity to hold and inspect a knife you never thought you would be able to. That knife you saw and thought was cool, the show is the opportunity to put it in your hand, is it what you thought it was? Is it bigger, smaller, a better fit in the hand or just not exactly what you were looking for?
So for those of you that have shows in your area.
Do you attend if you can?
Have you gone to that show more than once?
Do you do so much purchasing online that you don't feel the need to attend a show?
and a few more questions
Can you decide the worth well from the pic online?
Can you work out a fair price that you and the dealer can agree upon online?
So please share your thoughts with me
I have not been to a show. I will be going to my first one in March in Dalton, Ga. I would only buy new knives from a reputable dealer on line. Even then I would much prefer that it be from a dealer with whom I had a chance to talk with and convey my desires and requirements. The only way that I would buy a vintage knife would be face to face or maybe via emails etc. from someone I had established a degree of trust. I don't really know enough about vintage knives to keep myself from being ripped off.
So the show will be a good experience for me to meet some folks, learn a lot and find a great knife. I'll withhold overall judgement of the value of attendance until after my first experience.
I've been to shows bought on line and ebay. If you want to see whats your getting the show is the best just hate it when your order a stag knife and when you get it in the stag is about the worst you've ever seen. I like seeing my knives but some times you have to take what you get. I hope to make the show at Dalton also maybe we can meet up.
There is only one knife show in my area. I try to attend it every year and enjoy seeing the people and the knives. Being able to talk knives with other collectors and makers, is a real treat for me. I find it real nice to beable to hold a knife in my hand before buying it. I truly wish there were more shows I could attend.
Shows are no doubt the best, or in the store. You can see , hold feel the knife and thats a lot.
But a good online dealer that you can trust such as Greg Holmes, TSA knives, or Lee, or any of the well known and trusted dealers online are trusted and good guys that care. So i think that the flow of things ( and it takes a lot for me to say this)
the world is a changing and the key is find a good dealer you can trust , and depend on. Shows rule because you get to see friends, socialize , see great booths like iKC , and so many others and after all you cant see and shake hands with Sterling Buster online ... or can you?
just my thinkings... but what do I know LOL
LOL, Thats why I shared my thoughts Terry, just my opinion but both can exist and grow. Each has its own value, IMHO
