Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Ok, so you bows are all tuned, you have checked them to 40 yards.  You have also checked your sights for that favorite old rifle.  You have checked the blinds, made certain you have scent cover.  Have you even looked at the knife your taking?  Was it sharpened, cleaned and ready to prep a deer when you put it away last year?

Show what is going out in the field with you and tell me how you prep your knives for a season!

NICE!  Enjoy the weekend, make sure it is all safe and ready to go.  A nice selection you have there, something for every chore and most will do multiple chores

Here is my Smith & Wesson "SWCAMP" set that will stay in one of my hunting boxes at camp. No way I'm carrying my butchering knives on my waist or in my backpack with all the rest I feel like I need to carry!

I'll be carrying 6 Excalibur Bolt Cutter fixed blade broadheads, and 3 NAP Spitfire mechanicals. Since this is my first crossbow season, I want good samples of both fixed and mechanical and this will likely decide what I use in future. After seeing some bad reviews, and a very surprising video review of people shooting broadheads through metal to test them - I returned some NAP Redneck fixed broadheads I had bought from Dick's on sale.

Seeing how the NAP blades literally flew out of the ferrule on impact and seeing some people's reviews that the blades came out inside their deer - no way I want my hands inside a body cavity with the possibility of razors to mess me up even more than I might with my own knife!

Good discussion, Jan.

This is the time of year

..actually..

about Oct, when I start getting "requests".

.

i.e. I sharpen knives for co-workers for deer season

..primarily..

for gun season. Which, is generally, a Nov. occurrence.

.

The brand I see the most .. is "BUCK".

It is my personal observation .. they've a very loyal following.

The first & only knife I ever bought my Dad was a BUCK 110

Which I have. Dad passed about 17 yrs ago now.

I'm proud to say .. it was VERY used when I got it back.

.

I'll try to post some pics when they start arriving this year,

time permitting.

.

Enjoy

That is awesome Dale!  I love that the knife was obviously a good choice for him and it ended up back with you.

I would love to see some of what gets sharpened :)

Sorry Jan :-)  Life has been busy with work, preparing to head out to camp on Friday, a work party at camp checking stands and trails over the weekend almost 2 weeks ago now ... so this is a little overkill for my backpack sharpies, but still ...

Loving that lil handsaw!

So - back from my first week, and here are the knives I actually used. I carried the Gerber Freeman Guide with guthook on my belt every day, and had my old favorite Buck Omni 10 point in my pack. I missed a nice 10 pointer - too excited and impatient at my first opportunity I think, misjudged distance and killed a tree instead. But I brought home a spike 4 1/4  one side and 4 3/4 inches the other side instead. I thought he was a nice size doe but didn't see the spikes or I might have left him for another time.

Field dressing, I used my new Gerber, not bad, but I really like my Buck. Actually ... I used the Buck a lot too. Skinning and quartering I used all of them at different times. The Smith & Wesson Bullseye cleaver / bolo works really well sometimes for skinning, that rounded edge just helps a lot for some parts. The little Smith & Wesson at the top is good for the tenderloins and backstraps. I used the guthook for skin splitting rather than cutting with a straight blade from the outside which really reduced the amount of hair I needed to wash off meat afterwards. Most of the time for skinning I was alternating between the Smith cleaver and my Buck.

Well it looks like they all got their share of use!  Love that you found a way to reduce the hair clean up

I've actually never had a need to use that little Gerber bone saw yet, but if I ever do - then I will have it with me. At camp we have a full size hacksaw and loppers for most of those jobs, no need for details, you can imagine what needs to be lopped or sawed. :-)
