Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Many of us have dreamt of  "improving"  our knives.

Some have even implemented their improvements.

Here is a place to share and document those modifications.

Before & after pics are great .. I realize this isn't always possible .. I did some of mine years ago. A statement of design goals or modification purpose is a good place to start.

Identifying the desired changes & modifications is encouraged. As is a description of

the tools, any problems encountered, & methods used in the process.

A summary statement & pic of the final result will wrap it up !!

Also .. a place to share our mistakes.

Share what works & what doesn't.

Conquered a problem .. post a solution.

Up against a problem .. query for another's advice.

I am happy with JB weld because it has not failed me, it was recomended to me by knifemaker Gene Osborn. I also use K&G 24 hour epoxy with great results, it was recomended to me by knife maker Jim Ferguson, you can get it at: http://www.knifeandgun.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=37

I've never gone as far as rounding the back of my blades, just take the sharp corners off.
Finished product (total package) looks great.
.. people have whispered "obsession" ..
Wow .. nice !!!
Dug into storage .. still have a few in vintage boxes ..

Initial reference point.
Re: the 3rd pic of the dis-assembly series ... the brass colored dust/ filings/shavings .. around the pivot area .. are from the lock pin !!!
Thank you !
Computer simulation on a budget ..

Required: digital camera, computer, & software ..

I use .. http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm .. but .. lotsa other flavors out there !!!

This software provides a few basic drawing functions .. limited .. but, this is how I exploited them ..

....... the "straight line" function allows the generation of ...... guess ..... wharnie cutting edges !!

....... to keep as much of the original blade length as possible .. I chose to move the blade's "cutting edge" closer to the blade's spine.

....... to visually simulate this .. I generated the horizontal construction line as a trimming entity/border ..

....... lacking an actual trm/ext func .. I just "painted over" the unwanted portion .. I adj the line width and slid it around a bit for desired position ..

....... construction lines are normally deleted after use .. I left them in for example ..

....... the "ellipse..frame" function allows the generation of the outline of the ellipse.

....... I choose a narrow line width .. this is just a construction line .. sets up a trimming border.

....... adjust the size of the ellipse to fit the purpose .. grab any of the 4 anchor pts @ 0,90,180, or 270 deg .. and shrink/stretch the ellipse.

....... curser on the main anchor point to "slide" the ellipse in place.

....... paint over the un-desired portion of the blade's geometry.

The resulting jpg image yields an accurate simulation of the real world implementation of this "Modification" ... AND ... no steel has yet been removed !!!!!!!!!
NOTE: save a series of back-up files .. @ critical stages in the simulation .. that way .. if ya make a "bo-bo" .. it's not back to square one !!!
