The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
Fellow knife enthusiasts: I urge you to click on akti@akti.org and read "AKTI-It's a Busy Time". Please scroll down to Washington State HB 1006 introduced by Rep. Appleton regarding limiting knife lengths.
If you value your right to carry a knife, please realize that anti-knife groups are continually working to place limitations on knives and your right to carry one just as anti-gun groups are hard at work trying to place limitations on guns and your gun rights.
I am presently only a "grass roots supporter" of the AKTI (American Knife and Tool Intitute) which is an organization dedicated to preserving your knife rights just like the NRA is continually fighting to preserve our gun rights here in America. It costs nothing to be a "Grass Roots Supporter" but I plan on becoming a regular member for $35.00, later this month. I wish I could afford to contribute more.
It's a pity to realize that I feel it necessary to pay membership dues to support something which is guaranteed by our Constitution, but I unfortunately do. Just like I've paid for a conceal carry permit.
I urge y'all to give serious consideration to supporting the AKTI and NRA if you value your knife and gun rights or there will come a day when all you can do is keep your knives in a case and show them to your grandchildren while lamenting "I remember a time when it was legal to actually carry this".
That day is not far off if we do nothing.
Thank you, Kent

Steven,
I can not think of a time in our lives where it was more important to get involved than right now
I agree 100% Jan.
No joke. If we don't stop the current tide, we will have some real dark times ahead.
TSA to Allow Small Knives Onboard Aircraft Again - In an announcement at an aviation conference in New York, TSA administrator John Pistole said that effective April 25 the TSA was is lifting its ban on small knives in the cabin. It wasn't entirely clear for sure what small knives, exactly, would be allowed, because there wasn't a lot of specificity to what Pistole said, or at least what was reported on various news sites.
Pistole said that the allowable knives will be limited to "retractable blades shorter than 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) and narrower than 1/2 inch at the widest point." We're guessing that by "retractable" he meant "folding." Still prohibited would be "knives with locking blades or molded handles," Pistole said. While "locking blades" is a straightforward, if irrational, discriminator, it isn't at all clear what he meant by "molded handles."
He also said razor blades and box cutters would still be banned. Citing the 9/11 terrorists that used box cutters to kill flight attendants on the aircraft they hijacked, "there is just too much emotion involved with those," Pistole said.
Also, citing concerns raised by U.S. pilots, flight attendants and Air Marshals, certain types of small knives used primarily for hunting or as weapons will also continue to be prohibited. Again, it isn't at all clear what that means, but it sounds like an entirely subjective, and again irrational, standard that will likely include features like serrated blades or any blade style that appears "aggressive" to a TSA screener, at a guess. It will no doubt take a while for all involved to figure out where the line is between permitted and prohibited.
Pistole said allowing these items onboard would align the U.S. with ICAO and European standards and allow screeners to focus on the highest priority threat, non-metallic explosive devices. Since we have reports of passengers being allowed onboard in Europe with locking blade folders, we're still not clear how "aligned" this ends up being.
At this point, our assumption is that what they intend to allow are keychain sized knives like the Victorinox Classic and Wenger Esquire Swiss Army Knives or Leatherman Squirt or Style multi-tools. Victorinox and Leatheman have lobbied the TSA for many years for this exemption and it appears they final succeeded. Congratulations!
While hardly entirely rational in nature, it is a step in the right direction and one virtually all knife carriers will celebrate.
From the AKTI email I received
Brooklyn, NY (March 5, 2013) - The American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI) is pleased to announce breaking news for all knife owners. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced late this morning that they will allow people to carry small pocket knives on passenger planes.
The American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI) was instrumental in working with TSA to allow this policy change to happen. "As the knife and tool industry association, we were very pleased to work with the TSA on these revisions to ease the restrictions for all Americans carrying essential and valuable tools when they travel," noted Jan Billeb, AKTI Executive Director.
Effective April 25th, the agency will permit knives with blades shorter than 2.4 inches and narrower than 1/2 inch at the widest part. The regulations adopted will be consistent with the international rules.
More information will be available on the AKTI website shortly.
For more information, call (307) 587-8296 or visit the American Knife & Tool Institute website at www.AKTI.org. The mailing address is 22 Vista View Lane, Cody, WY 82414-9606. Or follow AKTI at: http://www.Facebook.com/SaveOurKnives.
We have a lot of news to share with fellow knife owners and everyone in the knife business. Your time and resources are very valuable and we try to respect them by limiting the number of emails we send. One way we do that is to only send you a "Call to Action Alert" email if it involves your state. After all, legislators are busy too and only want to hear from potential voters or people who work in their state.

Push back to the TSA decision regarding knives
Flight attendants' and pilots' unions have encouraged legislators to try to force TSA to reverse the knife and other items policy change. U.S. Rep. Markey (D-NY) and sixteen co-sponsors have introduced the "No Knives Act of 2013."
The Sporting and Work Knife Industry - Is a Bright Spot in the U.S. Economy
The American Knife & Tool Institute has released state of the industry data showing a vibrant knife industry that provides 17,830 support jobs and $4.844 Billion in total economic impact.

Knife Legislation on the Move
You probably won't be surprised to hear that we are tracking, supporting, and opposing a record number of bills related to knives this year. AKTI members can always login to the members' section of the website for the most current status on bills we are tracking. Please alert us to any issues you hear in your state, county or city. Here's a few of the positive things happening.
Alaska - Bills would clarify of gravity and switchblade definitions
Rep. Neuman reintroduced legislation to add AKTI's "bias toward closure" language that will protect Alaskans and those visiting the state from misinterpretation and potential criminal prosecution for carrying everyday knives and will incorporate knife law preemption. HB 33 has passed the House and is headed to the Senate where a companion bill HB 11 was introduced by Senator Fred Dyson. Alaskans should contact their Senators!
Idaho - Bill passed to allow concealed carry of knives with 4" blade without a carry permit.
HB 223 is sitting on the governor's desk after passing both houses unanimously.
Texas - Restrictions on switchblades would be removed
HB 1862 would remove prohibitions on switchblade knives including possession, manufacturing, transportation, selling or repairing.
Knife Preemption Bills
Several states have bills pending that would guarantee citizens do not have to be concerned about any city or local laws. State law would preempt the laws of local jurisdictions and make it easier for citizens to know and comply with knife laws.

Missouri 2013 Bill Will Add Back Switchblade Exceptions
Well at least my state is doing something...not sure this is exactly what I was looking for...
St. Louis, MO (April 4, 2013) – Thank you Rep. Wanda Brown for introducing Missouri House Bill 912. This piece of legislation will correct inadvertent errors when Missouri revised sections of its statutes on weapons in 2011. Efforts in 2012 to get this change passed failed due to lack of time during the session.
HB 912 revises the definition of knife to include any knife used for hunting or fishing and creates an exception to the crime of possessing certain weapons if the weapon is solely a keepsake, curio or ornament. This will provide much relief for Missouri knife owners who for years had been allowed to own these knives.
This bill has been referred to the House Committee on General Laws.
How do you have lack of time to take a simple vote?
That's easy...it's the government!
