slip joints & sun fish on the come back

i was recently reading gunner magazine witch there is a article saying the slip joints & sunfish are making a comeback.what do you guys think? i know that i did not know much about the sunfish knife untill i joined I K C now that i know more about them i am going to start collecting them more. i did not know that sailors carried them as did carpenters can anybody tell us more about them.what about the slip joint knife?

Slipjoints .. "This means that the blade does not lock, but, once opened, is held... .. is a rather broad 'n somewhat all encompassing term.

I could see the "sunfish" model making something of a comeback with collectors .. I do not believe it's "tactical" enough for the general market.

Stephen,

I have known many collectors that love their sunfish. We have purchased many for the collection over the years but I never felt a real attraction to them until recently. Since I have spent more time on IKC this year, I have seen many that I like and would purchase. I even bought one for Donnie for christmas. Speaking for myself, yes the interest has picked up, based on more exposure to them recently. Since they have not historically over the past few decades attracted the knife "users" the people that purchase them do so mostly based on collectable or "eye" appeal. As for slip joints, I would like to think or hobby is becoming more attractive especially to the younger crowd.

that was well said and thank you. i seen the sunfish going for some big money.that is funny for a knife i did not know a whole lot about a year ago .and i am 48 years old so it seems to me it would have to be more of a collector's knife.not to say it could'ent do a a good job for small task .the club knife will be the first sunfish for me.

There is a general overall resurgence in the interest of newly made slipjoints, customs and vintage. A whole new crop of collectors and makers are popping up almost every week . The slipjoint in general offers so many different patterns from simple single blades to very complex multi-blade knives sometime numbering blades in the dozens! The collector has a wide open field to play in. He can collect just one manufacture/time period, one pattern from many makers, just Sheffield made knives, so on and so forth. One of the things that attract a wide interest base is the vintage factor. These knives offer a rich history not only in our county but world wide. Many times they also offer a family history. I can not tell you how many times when I make a vintage pattern slipjoint and show it to someone I will hear, "my grandfather carried one just like that". These knives offer a link to our past which fuels the current interest in them.
