Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

When you were young, did you have troubles attaining knives?

I have a cousin, and I'd like to share with you a story, leave now if you don't like long stories. ;-D

Now my cousin wishes to own and collect knives, but my Aunt/ his mother will not let him. Now, I think this also has to due with the fact that I got cut so badly (If you have viewed M. Steel's old thread[ Speaking of which, he disappeared, what up with that?], you'd know, but if you don't know I'll make a long story short, I got nerve and tendon damage from a CS kukri).

She sees knives as deadly weapons, basically, she has that mindset. After she saw what they did to me, she figures it will happen to my cousin.

I basically had to break some things down for her, she said "I'm afraid he'll get cut".

I had to say to her, "How absurd, I can't believe you think their is a chance he is going to get cut, of course he is going to get cut!". She didn't know what to think of this, so I said to her simply this, "If you play with fire, you get burned. If you enjoy cooking, you're gonna get splashed with hot oil every now and then, and if you like sharp objects, you're gonna get cut. Knowing how to avoid these things and to be safe is a part of anything in life, he can't shield him forever"

I had to sit my cousin down and also explain to him these things, so I taught him how to use a knife. He started with a Swiss army kinda knife, and I taught him how to be safe with that knife (Because it is a slipjoint), and then I had to then explain to his mother how a sharper knife is indeed a safer knife, and a slipjoint is a prime example.

She is too stubborn, though. She really hasn't even tried giving him a chance at a real knife, so after that long story ( Thanks for sticking around. :D ) I would like to ask, did you all have to work or prove yourselves to get knives? Did you try sneaking some and hiding them?

Myself, well I had to work very hard, because my family isn't one that understands the importance and convenience of a knife (Except my brother).

I haven't a clue when I got my first knife. I always got dad's used knives. And when I got dad's next knife, I had to pass mine down to my younger brother, and he passed his down to our youngest brother.
We grew up on a farm in SE Oklahoma. A knife was an essential tool. We raised cattle, and grew all our own fruits and vegetables. I got my first car when I was 9 years old, and I had been carrying pocket knives for several years when I got that 1941 surplus Army Jeep, so I don't really know how old I was when I got my first used knife.
I do know that the year I was 12 years old, I took some of my money from picking cotton for a neighbor, and went to Hudson's Big Country Store in Coalgate, Oklahoma and bought my first NEW knife! It was a Case yellow handled Cattleman. I wore it out and bought several other brands over the years, but I kept coming back to a Case.
My father had a box full of folders/pocket knives. He was more than willing to show me any & I was given some at early age. I was in mid teens when he died and I still have his knives in my collection. My 2 sons, now on their own, both have a # of knives and like my collection. When the time gets closer :) I will have to box up into 2 piles and stop any fighting.
Craigslist dude......
Nope. 43blk.

I'm lucky, I guess, my father was a horse breaker by trade and worked on a ranch many years. He always had a good knife on him and that never has changed. My mother never got involved in that situation neither. She never said anything about me having a knife.

My grandfather gave me my first one at 4 years old. My dad taught me to sharpen it and use it like any good tool should be used.

I had many friends that never could get a pocket knife and that really amazed me. They had pens and pencils, paper and binders....how could they not have a knife?

I will say I am very lucky to be raised the way I was raised.

When I was a kid it was absolutely verboten to carry a knife. Why do you need a knife? Knives were only found in the kitchen and only hoodlums carried them. Looking back it was like the Dark Ages in history.

Boy were my parents surprised when I told them I had a semi-automatic pistol (I think I was 15). I really thought they were going to have a stoke and die in front of me. "Gee Ma don't worry....I don't have any bullets,,,,,see it's missing the clip"
