I have recently had an interest in learning about the equipment needed for surviving in a Bug Out situation. In learning the proper tools and equipment to have, I have also started backpacking and…Continue

Hahahahahaha.
Howard, there are bears in Chicago but they prove to be ineffectual and less threatening year after year. Its been almost 30 years since they've been a real threat to anything or anyone.
Tobias, if you can find a stick with a "Y" at the top, it would also make a good shooting stick for your handgun, for those long shots. They have bears in Chicago, don't they?
Wow, that sounds interesting. Please take pictures if you do it.
What I'm thinking about doing with one of the sticks is carving out a slot where I can insert a 91mm Swiss Army Knife such a Vic Huntsman or maybe a "Hiker" in the handle and then cord wrap the handle to keep the knife in place. And perhaps put a compass on top of the handle.
(I've also thought about keeping the knife in place by using a small clasp through the key ring)
I just remembered, we had a little trip of our own two weeks ago. I'll open up a new discussion for it I think.
Those woods sound good, just make sure you let them dry a while. I use all sorts of hard woods.
I do carve on some of them, it would make a great topic for whittlers. I also inlet old coins an stuff.
A fine topic Robert & Tobias. Maybe up on the Whittling blog. A walking stick begs for carving snakes and such in it. Plus, whatever knife you use to whittle figures in the sticks would be of interest, as well.
Robert, what type of tree do you prefer to use or do you have a preference. I'm in the process of drying four saplings at the moment. They include
Water Maple
Honey Locust
2 x Sassafras.
The honey locust was tricky due to all the little spikes but it looks like it will be nice with little black knobs.
The Sassafras was very fragrant and seems to be drying with wonderful red and white striping!
They seem hard enough but I wonder how well it it hold up compared to other woods. Maybe if we have enough interest, we can start a walking stick discussion within this group.
Lately I have been cutting young trees to start making Walking Staffs again. I had stopped for a while, then I got an order for 35 staffs. I have found a few nice ones so for. Some I need to go back to and cut. I try to find unusual little trees. When a vine wraps around the tree and they grow together, it makes a very unusual growth. I call them a "vine wrap". I'll try post some photos of those I find.
