Brian,
I took a cursory look at pyramidair.com, and saw some reviews of various pellet guns which I will read; thanks for the resource. They do rate low-end pellet guns. Paradigms or mind-set is an issue. Diana RWS-48 sidelever spring rifle (no scope) starting at: $429.95 vs Bass Pro Shops Savage 93R17 FXP .17 HMR with scope: $299.99. I know that it is apples and oranges when talking applications, but things frequently come down to "bang for the buck". I don't intend being an Olympic competitor (saw a Beeman HW 100S FSB precharged pneumatic rifle starting at: $1,449.95), so my question should probably be: of the pellet guns available at Walmart, which is best? And, can I kill a groundhog building a home in the woodpile with it?
I have a Remington AirMaster 77 - I use .177 cal pellets and have killed Squirrels, Rabbits, and Chipmunks as well as Starlings and Crackles - when they bother the bird feeders or get in the garden and terrace walls. It shoots good and is plenty powerful enough, no scope, but have to pump it 7 times and that's getting harder and harder.
Thanks for the info., Tobias.
Howard and others for that matter, I have heard that pump type guns should be stored empty but pumped at least one. I'm not sure is this applies to break barrel Pellet guns or not.
As for long term storage of BB guns, you are better off firing the rifle occasionally (even dry firing) or like automobiles the action is likely to freeze up.
Anyone else hear or read this.
Lewis & Clark expedition is fascinating, Charles. If you or anybody else knows about it, maybe you could start a new thread on it. All I know is what PBS showed, and I have found that if you actually know something about which PBS does a show, there are gaps.
I have a Ruger Air Hawk break barrel pellet rifle. It is supposed to be 1000 fps. I have killed squirrels with it. It is a well made rifle. (I wish it had been made in the US instead of China.) It came with a 4x scope and cost around $100.
When my son was younger he had a pump up air rifle, I believe it was a Daisy. When you pumped it up the maximum 10 pumps, it would embed the pellet in a tree.
Did you know Lewis and Clark carried an air rifle on their expedition?
Yes Robert, but can you understand him when he speaks; all the whereases, heretofores, party of the first part stuff? I'm interested in pellet rifles as well. Bought a Winchester '94 BB gun from A.G. Russell a few years back, but I am keeping it pristine. Need to know which pellet gun to buy to use. All the ones at Walmart seem to be made in China, no matter what name is on the box - even Ruger, and as Tobias said, I don't want to pay Weatherby prices for a .177 pellet gun. And, should I get one that shoots .177 & .22?
I could call my cousin, later and get his opinions on the different guns. He's just so busy, a lawyer and all. Just, wait and I'll try get the low down on all of them. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and a very smart man. Lawyer and all....lol
I have an older Gamo 1000 fps pellet rifles. If you get good quality pellets it is very accurate. I have killed squirrels from approx. 100 feet. We use to practice shooting paint balls at 10 yards. I have found if you change type of pellets you will need to re-zero.
