I have recently had an interest in learning about the equipment needed for surviving in a Bug Out situation. In learning the proper tools and equipment to have, I have also started backpacking and…Continue

I own one of those pellet pistols. They are built strong and shoot well. They are, however, not very accurate, compared to a rifle but still a lot of fun.
I favor a break barrel, Gamo. A pump is a lot more work, per shot. I don't have any speks on any of them.
My cousin, the one that shoots in competition, has a homemade indoor shooting range. He's a lawyer and lives in the city and can't just go outside to shoot. It's a lot of fun, an indoor range, and can keep you shooting in the city. When he comes to my house, he goes wild with his pellet guns. I own 15 acres and my other cousin owns 10 acres next door. We set up targets everywhere, while we Bar-B-Que or cook something. It's lots of fun.
Good points Tobias, I'll be looking for responses to your questions as well.
Mostly BB guns but as I mentioned I'm looking for decent low priced Pellet gun. I know there are some decent plinkers by Crosman and Daisy but I'm leaning toward the The Gamo Silent Cat.
But I need to learn more about pellet guns before I start tossing down money. My two main concerns are
1) spring piston vs. gas piston
2) Break barrel vs. pump
I assume their are trade off with both types of systems but I've not heard much about why one is better than the other or when a person would prefer one system over the other.
My current experience is limited to relatively inexpensive BB guns:
As for targets: When I'm in the "Cutlery Cavern" the targets are normally paper with foam core backing. The target is mounted on a cardboard box filled with packing peanuts. Behind that is a couple loose hanging bed sheets. Everything is designed to prevent ricochets. I'm firing in doors! I have yet to miss the target but there is always the first time!
For outdoor target practice, I like to to shoot at small cans, half filled water bottles, and suspended over-ripened fruit. Its quite enjoyable shooting an apple or a cantaloupe into itty-bitty pieces. Walnuts and other such items are also quite fun. I suspend them from a tree branch with 7 pound test line and then try to crack open the nut.
Its really fun when there is a slight breeze. You not only have to adjust your aim but you need to track a moving target!
Guys, do ya'll shoot air rifles also? I like shooting metal animals, as opposed to paper targets. This will hone your skills with a firearm and make you a better shot. Shooting a .177 pellet in the wind, will teach you windage, right quick. The wind effects a .22 cal. also but not as bad. This is just another great outdoor activity, that can be enjoyed on smaller plots of land. The cost is not to bad either, unless you buy big time competition air rifles, but for the average shooter, a gun and pellets can be had for around the $100 mark. I shoot a Gamo Wildcat / with scope. I bought it refurbished from Cabella's for under $100.
Brian, looks like a lot of fun. Where in Missouri? I grew up in SE Missouri.
That really looks great. I could spend hours there. (If I could get there!)
Looks like a lot of fun, Brian.
Brain, you have found another one of my hobbies. Air Rifles! We shoot them for fun all the time. I have a cousin that shoots in competition and is into it even more than me. It is great fun, indoor and out. I prefer a realistic shoot, the way ya'll have set it up. Nice clean outdoor fun. Keep us posted.
