Tonight I'm going to the Delta Waterfowl Banquet. This is my second banquet this year. I made the Ducks Unlimited back in September. It's hard not to go when it's paid for and they pick me up at the house. I hope I win something. It's a great time and I see a lot of hunters there.
Thanks guys, I'm glad ya'll enjoyed my little hunt.
Glad to hear that you were able to 'fish' that squirrel out of the tree, Robert. Anyone who has ever cut bamboo can tell ya that it's no easy task. That your knife was able to accomplish that feat and still retain an edge sharp enough to skin your prize is quite a testament to that knife's edge retention and quality of steel.
Cheers, my friend -- loved your story and its' happy ending!
Don't remember who imparted this wisdom to me, but here goes: It isn't the knife you own that matters, it's the knife you have on you. Great to have a knife that works for the task(s) you set for it.
I haven't eaten squirrel since college when my 82 year-old landlady would shoot & skin squirrels for squirrel meat pie. She also baked bread every week, and sometimes pies.
Great story Robert, thanks for sharing.
A small knife story: Sunday I was hunting squirrels and was doing well. I need two more for my limit so I was hunting hard. Suddenly, I spotted 3 squirrels feeding in a large pecan tree. The only trouble was how thick it was around the tree. I took my time and then took my best shots. Sure enough, I got them both, but when I went to get my prize, I could only find one of them. After looking a while I spotted one hung in the tree about 15 feet above the ground. I didn't want to loose it and was determined to find a way to retrieve it. I spotted a stand of Bamboo, with tall timbers. I decided to cut one and use it as a pole to dislodge my squirrel.
Well that morning, I brought only my small Swamp Fox knife with me, 7" at best. I was not deterred, I began cutting on the base of the Bamboo with my small cutter and sure enough, it did the trick.. Now to take the Bamboo pole and get my squirrel. Yes, the trick worked well and I had my prize.
Later, that morning, I decided to clean all the squirrels with this knife, without a touch up on the blade, to really see how good it truly is. Well it preformed, perfectly, a true test to a knife made by the Swamp Fox.
Ron, you are right about those wild hogs, they are not to be fooled around with. They start out with a bad attitude that just gets worst with human contact.. I have friends that got real bad cuts from them. Their tusk can open you up like a knife. If they cut an artery, back in the woods you may be in real trouble.
It was Ken, the hunting and camping was good and the food was excellent.
I think my young man is learning how much fun life can be doing good things, not bad. He really has a lot to offer, he just needs someone to spend time with him and show him things. I am enjoying him. He'll make a real good man one day.
Sounds and looks like a great trip Robert.
Tobias, that is a little Bone Collector. I gave it to him this week end. It seems to be doing great but he's doing the testing. I'll give ya'll a review on it later after he uses it a while. He was really excited with it, he wore it all week end.
