I wish I could be there!
Congrats Ron! I have only heard good things also and I know you will enjoy it
Ms Data -- For Canada we can have short barrels--even 12" ones and without a tax stamp--as long as they are manufactured that way and not semi auto but they can't be used for self defence. We have to fight with equal force so if the bad guy comes in with a knife all I can do is stab or bludgeon the SOB not shoot him. Also, the gun has to be locked up in a safe with ammo in a separate location.
BUT
The Remington 870 WAS a great gun prior to 1995 but had/has declined considerably prior to and after having being taken over by the Freedom Group etc. in 2005. Cerberus bought them for a song because the quality had declined and they would try to bolster the sales and manufacturing quality which they did, somewhat. The quality is still down (from what it once was) and Remington has had numerous recalls on their guns.
I hope that he gets a good one but he should be advised that there have been difficulties.
Thing is, Mossberg is no better. IMO it is by far the worst.
Only new pump that I'd consider is the Browning BPS or the Benelli Nova/Super Nova albeit not American made and more expensive and the Ithaca Model 37 for a US company of comparable price. There have been some Turkish guns being imported that are modeled after the 870 that are excellent.
Extra barrels are available for all the makes and models either from OEM or after market suppliers. Used barrels can be got from the likes of www.corsonsbarrels.com/ or www.barrelexchange.com/
Ron, you will love your 870. Many years ago I had an 870 that I just loved. I don't even remember what I traded it for but I'm pretty sure I regret it. You can get all kinds of different barrels for it, slug barrels, 18-1/2" home defense barrels (I don't know how that works in Canada), it can be configured many ways, and they are great shotguns. Congratulations!
Remington will soon be building guns just down the road from me in Huntsville Alabama.
Ron, don't blame me for your gun addiction, I was merely the enabler-LOL- However, If you JUST have to own one, the Remington 870 is a great choice- I sold the Remington 870 40 years ago, and have shot both skeet and trap with one- The 870 would not be around as long as it has, if it wasn't a great gun to begin with-- Happy shooting- I may have created a monster !! But disclaimer- I accept no blame for your ongoing gun mania !!
Is that the Remington 870 Ron?
That should make a great home defense gun Data.
