Wow! I had just responded to a previous picture before looking at this one and noticing your comment, Carl. I had guessed that it was a Gopher snake. I had never seen a So. Texas Rat Snake before. That looks like a belt on the hoof from my perspective!

In mid March I found this guy under my hose at first he startled the hell out of me and then I got a good look at the head. Its a South Texas Rat Snake a big one almost 6 feet long. If you look right were the hose crosses his body you can see a bulge in his body its probably a rabbit or something that he caught.I left him alone and the next morning he crawled over to some oak trees and right in front of he crawled up into the top of the trees and looked like he was trying to ambush a bird. Never saw a snake climb into a tree before. I got to thinking that bulge may be a bird!
