Synthetic scales on both of 'em. Even in the reflection of light there are no grains showing on the botton one which has never happened for me with ebony regardless of quality or polish. It's hard to tell but if the lightning hits it the grains will light up a bit.

 

Most of these old knives had synthetic scales though, it was the big boom at that time when plastic was new (especially the topmost type, don't remember the process it was called).

That doesn't matter one bit though as these are highly collectable!

I could tell it was a SCHRADE .. and that's a pinned on shield .. I suspect the scales matl is synthetic ... I would NOT suggest the pin test !!!

So that's what a Whittler looks like. Told you I wasn't a true (Read knowledgeable) knife collector.

Reads: Schrade Cut. Co. Walden, N.Y.

Could be synthetic though it does look like the keys on my piano. Maybe I should poke it with a hot needle like you would to see if something was ivory or not, unless you have another idea. Really don't want to cause any damage,  it's in good shape and has a great feel.

Looks like a nice Whittler there .. JJ'd like a looksi on that one I bet .. what the scale matl .. ebony or synthetic .. 'n the stamping ?????
