The Bayonet - Not Just Another Pretty Knife

The Bayonet - Not Just Another Pretty Knife

A bayonet (from French baïonnette) is a knife, dagger, sword, or spike-shaped weapon designed to fit on the end of the muzzle of a rifle, musket or similar firearm, allowing it to be used as a polearm or spear-like weapon. From the 17th century to World War I, it was considered a primary weapon for issue to infantry units. Today it is considered an ancillary weapon or a weapon of last resort.

In terms of type, as with knives, bayonets are typically categorized as Plug, Socket, Sword, Knife, Training, Multipurpose, and Experimental. And as with knives, there are always the exceptions, such as hybrid and folding bayonets that cross these defined boundaries.

This album showcases my humble International bayonet collection spanning from 1790 to present day.
