One of the first resource books I purchased back in the late 70’s, it still holds its value and contributions 50 years later. For a relatively small book, its content is so rich and timeless, it has become one of the “must have” books to own for bayonet collectors. The resale price for a poor copy these days proves that out. Plus - and this is a big deal - I have two of the three sword bayonets shown on the cover!

The Bayonet: A History of Knife and Sword Bayonets 1850-1970 is a book by John Anthony Carter, illustrated by John Walter, that details the evolution of bayonets from the mid-19th century through the Vietnam War. It covers the development of both knife and sword bayonets and is a resource for militaria collectors.

Key features:
• Subject: The book focuses on the history of bayonets, specifically the knife and sword types that were prominent between 1850 and 1970.
• Time Period: It covers a significant period of military history, from the American Civil War and Crimean War through both World Wars and into the Vietnam War era.
• Content: It provides details and illustrations of these specific types of bayonets, which were important for collecting and studying military history.
• Authors: The book is written by John Anthony Carter and illustrated by John Walter.
• Publication: It was published in 1974 by Scribner's and Arms and Armour Press, with 128 pages and over 300 black and white illustrations and line drawings.
