Pretty good ingenuity to get the look and feel you wanted!  Looks great, let us know as the summer goes on how this grip is working out??

Ron - I don't fault you at all for what you thought you saw. I looks at many hawk modifications before settling n this one, instead of a wrap. Most of them are wrapped, just as you stated, in paracord or twine. I just wanted something with some grip and a little different look. So far I like how it turned out. Thanks!

Thanks, Jeremy! Again, giving credit to failing eyesight, what I thought I was seeing was a twine type wrap. I guess it was the reflection from the tape that trick my eyes into seeing what I "thought" it might be. Also, I believe that I have been programmed into thinking that a textured wrap would, by default, mean either twine or paracord. So, again, thank you for explaining and describing your process to me. My bad for seeing what I wanted to see, and for not seeing what really was. Duh!

It looks great!

Ron - I spent some time looking in multiple stores yesterday, trying to find the tape that I wanted to use for the wrap. I struck out. The only tape I found that was close, was a fabric, base ball bat, grip tape, but it was white. I didn't want to invest a whole lot in the wrap, so I spent $4 on the white tape, with hopes of being able to dye it black (again without spending more money). I tried black walnut, wood stain, black shoe polish and a Sharpie. None of them gave me what I was looking for. When I woke up this morning, I had a new thought, how about paint? So, that is what I did. I sprayed it with a textured paint and then a coat of black, satin, for the top coat. We'll see how it holds up.That would be why it looks flush with the wood. :)

What did you use to wrap this, Jeremy? And did you make the area recessed so that the wrapping material is inset? Maybe it's just my old eyes? But the wrap appears to be flush with wood at either end? Do you understand what I'm saying?

Great job, in any event! Kudos, mate!
