The sheaths are often wood or sheet metal but sometimes leather. They were popular souvenir items in the Caribbean and Latin America.

I have no idea what the local call them. I call them gris-gris as this is a Caribbean term for "good luck charm."

man that is an scary piece of polynesian art.....but sure took a lot of work carving it.....
