The Luftwaffe daggers were patterned after the traditional German Hunting Daggers.  I think Hermann Goerring had some say in their design.  He was among other things, the Reichsjagermeister, or minister of hunting for the Third Reich.  Surprisingly Goering implemented numerous laws that restricted some common hunting practices at the time, among them chasing down animals on horse back or with packs of dogs.   Many of the laws he implemented remained in place after the fall of Nazi Germany.  The laws were enacted to give the animals a sporting chance. It is kind of strange when you consider the way the Nazis treated their fellow men.

Anyway, if you familiar with the hunting daggers, and are familiar with Goering's record as a fighter pilot in WWI then a knife such as this make sense.  Goering took over the Red Baron's  Flying Circus when Richtofen was shot down by Australian ground fire.  He was credited with 22 confirmed kills.   And like the Red Baron, he shared the philosophy that  the fighter pilot as a hunter in the sky.

"The photos in the previous post are of an old German pruning type knife I just aquired. It surely is interesting, and quite old."
