Camillus Cutlery 697 Sailors Knife & Packaging 021

Camillus Model #697 "Cabone Handled" Sailors Rigging Knife w/marlin Spike. 4-1/2" closed with Stainless Steel marlin Spike and Rope cutting Blade. Circa 1960-1975 DOD Issued and private Sale. Super Strong Snap and the marlin spike locks in the open position for safety purposes. First recorded USN issue was in 1915 and made by the Camillus Cutlery Co.

Hi

Yes they are very unique and were regular government issue since 1915 for the most part. Case Knives along with about every other Knife manufacturer in the USA have produced similar knives. The Shackle/Bail you're referring too isn't a bail at all and no it's not attached to a bolster pin either. This is the release mechanism for the Marlin Spike and is directly attached to the back spring. The lower portion of this release bar/handle is round and pivots on the Bolsters lifting the backspring inadvertently disengaging the lock notch in the marlin spike allowing you to close it.

What a unique knife....am i right the bail is on a metal plate that is attached to the bolster pin?
