The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
After custom maker Randy Haas did such an astounding job on my Chopper, I simply HAD to have more of his work. So...we put into motion the knife that actually was originally on the list in front of the Chopper. Shown here is my brand new Fighter.
I'm a big fan of sub-hilt fighters and wanted something very unique. Randy and I spent a lot of time working out the handle design, blade shape (with a shallow swedge), hilt concept, materials and overall size. Each facet was well thought out...all the way down to the mosaic pins, spacers and multi-material orientation (blue birch burl, nickel silver, ebony and tiger Damascus). The result is positively UNREAL in it's beauty.
Frankly, the size and balance of this knife are as much of it's inherent beauty as the overall aesthetic. I have hamburger paws and the handles on most knives tend to be a little small to my liking. When I first gave Randy the handle and blade lengths that I wanted, he was a little surprised and voiced some concern that the knife might be a little big. We bounced some ideas back and forth and and agreed on a dimension very close to my original spec. I'm very glad that we took some time working that part of the design out...because the balance of this knife is UNBELIEVABLE. Though this blade is 13 1/2" long, it is crazy fast and feels positively ALIVE in my hand.
As fantastic a job as Randy did on my Chopper, the workmanship and attention to detail is EVEN MORE AMAZING on the Fighter! The word "breathtaking" barely begins to describe it. The blue birch handle scales are absolutely enthralling...MESMERIZING. The finish that he put on these is more than satiny-smooth, it feels PERFECT...and warm to the touch. The mosaic pins fit flawlessly...which serves to set off the Ebony sub-hilt transition and white spacers. Take a good look at the blade; Randy originally suggested the Tiger Damascus...and he was spot-on! I love looking at the patterns on the blade! This is a knife that pulls me in...and makes me positively marvel at Randy's God-given talent.
Last, but not least, the sheath is A PHENOMENAL piece of leather artistry. Though I don't show it in detail with this specific photo, this is...FAR AND AWAY...the very coolest leather sheath I have ever had! It has a snake-skin inlay on the face of the sheath that is just too cool! The sheath is inspiring enough that when I get more time, I'll be photographing it so that viewers can share in this treat!
The Steel Doctor, Randy Haas...has done it again! Well, really, he's outdone himself. This incredible heirloom will stay in my family, to be passed down from this generation to the next...and from my son...to his son. This knife is THAT BRILLIANT.
