I will be working on some more of these. I still want to get one, that is made from wood, to work.

I am glad you were able to get this version to work well.  I can understand why the metal instead of wood now.  I have to admit, I have learned a lot while following you as you build your fire starter kit

I had to look twice,..looked like parts of a homemade waterpipe....so I'm told

It is a very interesting concept. The idea is, you create an air tight chamber, where you can compress the air. In the end of the piston, there is a small and shallow hole drilled, where you can place a small piece of char cloth. When you push the piston into the chamber, very quick and forcefully, you compress the air at the end. This creates a small chamber that is heated to around 500 degrees F. That will cause the char cloth to ignite. Then you are able to start your fire tinder with the char cloth.
