Yes, there is quite a difference. Birds of prey are really interesting. We have some Eagles around here right now.

Yep! I do believe you're right, Ken. I was waaay off with my guess of a Peregrine Falcon. Completely different coloring on the two. Check it out:

Here is the Peregrine Falcon...

And here is the Red-shouldered Hawk...

As shown in the pictures, the Peregrine has much darker plumage than the Hawk. And there are other distinguishing features such as size and weight that can be described on their respective Wikipedia pages. Here are the links for those pages, should anyone be interested in learning more about these beautiful creatures:

Peregrine Falcon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peregrine_Falcon

Red-shouldered Hawk: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-shouldered_Hawk

Thanks to your photo and my incorrect guess I am now just a little bit more informed than I was previously. And for that I thank you!

Ron, I'm not sure, but I think it is a Red Shouldered Hawk.

Is that a Peregrine, Ken? A splendid looking bird of prey!
