I assume Australia retained the usage because of the wide open spaces.  Had no idea about Poland though.  Great information

One of man's first multi purpose survival tool's where boomerang's, They were used for tasks ranging
from hunting, digging for roots some have been found with sharpened ends for butchering meat.
There is also evidence that they were used to start fire by friction and as percussion instrument.
The conception that boomerangs originated in Australia is wrong they have been used by people
all over the world the oldest( 23,000 years old) a mammoth tusk boomerang having been found
in Poland.
