It's a fuller sometimes called a "blood groove" on a knife on a sword it was meant to lighten the blade to where the Point of Balance was just forward of the cross guard.... It lightened the blade for balance. Viking swords from the period had the best Balance of any sword made during that period. Most Viking broadswords weighed under 3-4 pounds. The people they fought against swords weighed over 6 pounds.... giving the Vikings a serious Advantage....
At 4.5 inches this is an amazing artwork that really is sharp and works!
