Guys, if we're voting, I'd have to go with steel, though I won't knock ceramic. 

My wife was cutting something on her dinner plate with a ceramic knife.  The knife slipped and broke the plate.

We've got a couple in the kitchen shows no indication of problems, as yet.

Just my 2 cents.

I had a set of ceramic kitchen and steak knifes... they were great at first but they chipped far to easily for any wide or heavy use.  The 9in chef knife fell off the counter and snapped off about the first inch or 2.  We got rid of all of them about 7months after getting them.  Except for the tomato and bread knives, they stuck around for about 2 years.  So all in all, for Specialized things they are cool and super sharp, but for broader use i will stick to steel.

James they are for a narrower field of application than you would like.  However, I would not describe them as "not too good".  Within the confines of their intended use they work quite well.  They are obviously not for you.

Sharpening requires a VERY fine abrasive.

My wife and I use a ceramic knife in the kitchen. I have one in a Benchmark folder. They are really sharp. I noticed that the one in the kitchen was getting a couple of really small nicks in the blade. My wife uses it for paring usually, so there is no telling what she is cutting on.

Cesar, I wouldn't exactly call it fragile.  I wouldn't use it as a pry-bar either.  It is wicked sharp out of the box.  I have edc'ed it a bit.  I wouldn't drop it on its head or anything so sinister as that.  I wouldn't use it for hacking at metal staples or processing wood.  But if you want one for a pocket slicer, its utility to mass ratio is very high.  The thing is almost weightless!
