Forged from pre 1820's file (had hand cut teeth). Appears to be multi-layered steel.
WI guard forged from old bolt found in creek near old Civil War mill site. Deer legbone handle with braided cord and rawhide wraps, carved.

The biggest surprise with this old file, other than it being hand-cut, was finding it complied of layers of steel, just like any modern day "Damascus". I've had several other knowledgeable bladesmiths and knifemakers examine the blade closely and all have determined it to be layered steel as well.

Super cool find in an old junk box.

Sue is right.  Very cool that it comes with a well respected past.  Forged first and forged again
