It may have been born out of a mistake ...  but for the troops it would have been a handy knife just the same. Thanks for sharing.

Okay after some painstaking research here's the story on this old knife.

It's a Camillus Model #9511 Red Cross Knife w/Spoon made in 1917 for the Army troops and arrived in their "Christmas" packages. It was a huge misunderstanding that brought these early Red Cross Knives to life. A hard of hearing or half Deaf Salesman asked a general what they needed and suggested a folding knife that incorporated a spoon and the general replied there would be no need as the troops were all issued knives and spoons but the deaf salesman heard him say yes knife & Spoons and so the model #9511 was born. There were a total of 500,000 to 1,000,000 made by every manufacturer known at that time but all contracts were cancelled eventually when the foul up was discovered. Major Knife makers such as Case cutlery, Robson, also made this early Christmas Knife
