Actually, Jan, this is the shortened version of its predecessor, the M1905. It had a 16" blade on it and was designed to be used on the .30 M1903 Springfield Rifle of WWI vintage. In fact, many of those older bayonets were cut down to the 10" size and used in WWII. You can spot them easily because the blood trough extends all the way to the tip of the blade. Unlike mine that stops about 2" shy of the tip. The bayonet has a really interesting history!
