RIPPLE CRKT A Ken Onion design, flipper, framelock, the center pivot pin is in a ball bearing race that makes an almost frictionless pivot. Chinese steel, not my favorite, but I carry it sometimes because of its serrations, light weight and ease of opening. Steel frame is a little on the heavy side for its size. Which brings me to the next knife….
EROS CRKT Like the Ripple - Ken Onion design, flipper, center pivot pin is in a ball bearing race, framelock… but THEN… Beautifully designed titanium handles, very grippy . Weighs almost nothing. Japanese ACUTO steel. I haven’t sharpened it yet, but it’s held its original edge and has a wicked point and the sexiest profile of any small knife I’ve ever seen. Opens instantly, looks so cool it’s one of my favorite knives to carry. Only criticism-the aluminum clip bends too easily. If you get one, be very gentle to the clip. Mine has lasted only because I treat the clip gently.
M16-10Z - CRKT Design-Kit Carson. Chinese steel, Flipper, odd lock mechanism. “Auto LAWKS”. When you open the knife, a spring engages a pivot that rolls a bar between the liner lock and the liner. To close the knife, use your thumb to disengage the LAWKS, then move the liner. It is a great idea, the extra support for the liner lock, but it is also a pain in the butt. This is a pretty new knife to me. No strong opinion about using this knife yet.
Medium Voyager – Cold Steel I got this the same time I got the Recon. Just after 9-11, police in New York pressured knife dealers to sell off knives. A martial arts store in Manhattan sold off all its knives. I got there late and bought as many as I could. This knife is a “go to” long time favorite of mine. The Japanese steel is great and the lockup is perfect. The new models are a safer design, but I like the steel on this old one much better. It weighs nothing and I’ve taken it on a ton of camping trips. I love this one.
Russlock Case, green wormgroove handles. I got this from James Parker a long time ago. I didn’t realize it was a rare knife. I have never seen another one. The handles are gorgeous. I have to say, I don’t love the steel. I use it when I need a smaller knife. I carry it in a knife pouch. At the 2nd knife show I went to, the Pres. of Spyderco was demonstrating the Triangle Sharpmaker and sharpened it for me. It was before I knew about knife cases and I carried it in my pocket and banged it up a bit. If I bought this now, I would put it up and save it, but now, it is a tool to use…
RICK HINDERER PENS ok, ok… I don’t need two of the same model I know I know, I thought I lost the green one, so I bought the black one. The next day, the green one fell out of a shirt I had in the trunk of my car…. Oh well. I love them and they almost are the only pens I use.
SPARTAN Cold Steel. This is one beefy, giant knife. It has Cold Steels version of Emerson’s wave (a protruding thumbplate) it opens instantly (after some practice). Because it is such a giant, it’s awkward to open w/one hand. Open, it fits my hand perfectly and is designed to protect the hand. It is Taiwanese steel, not my favorite, but it is a bad-ass, huge folder. The lock is extremely well thought (like every Cold Steel lock). Obviously, living in the NY area, I can’t carry this knife often, but when I do, it’s comforting.
Lens light Tactical bevel, uses 2 CR123 batteries. 500lumens(high). The beam focuses and will go for about 3 football fields when focused. I carry this every day, everywhere I go. I teach school and I use it during “active shooter drills” to get students to stop talking rather than make noise myself. I carry it onstage as a musician, I carry it when I drive. The lens light company is a great company. They stand behind what they make 100%. I got tired of spending $40-$60 for a flashlight and having it break in 5 months so I spent the $180 for this one. So what if my kids didn’t eat for a week, they are young, it’s good for them.
