An old metal bar that had been made and used by my grandfather for securing an old gate on his farm. I took it down and am in the process of making a knife out of it. I cut a piece off earlier and tested to see if it will be hard enough after heat treatment.

Firstly I took the whole metal bar that I took off grandfathers old gate and placed it in the fire pit for a number of hours, annealing it. This allows me to work with the metal. The next step that I took was to cut off roughly 3inches of the metal bar and I brought this to a friend who has an electric furnace. We brought this piece to the desired heat of 1400 deg.F. The piece did not crack and it is hard. the Rockwell number is unknown to me at this time. I will see once I finish the knife to what hardness I will be able to bring it. If you have any advice on the process of knife making please be so kind and write. I am a novice and need all the advice I can get!

so.. you dont know what kind of metal it is? how do you know how to heat treat it? different metals react to heat treating differently. how did you "test" the metal?
