A knife by committee.....can it be done?

Allright. All my projects are temporarily on hold because of things like heat treat/waiting for materials.

But I still want to play around with steel. So I've decided to design a knife by comittee.

Here's how this works. I need input from all of you, as much as possible. Everyone who responds please give me the following information as to what you'd like to see me make.

Steel, I have 3 options,

  • 2mm thick OW3 steel,
  • 5,6mm thick OW3 steel or
  • an old Nicholson file.

Next, specify what SIZE blade you'd like to see.

Let me give you a few options,

  • 2" blade
  • 3" blade
  • 4" blade
  • 5" blade
  • 6" blade

or something in between, please state.

Bladeshape:

  • Droppoint
  • Clippoint
  • wharncliffe
  • traditional tanto
  • american tanto
  • anything else you'd like to see

Handle shape

please describe as best as you can. This will be a full tang knife because I already have three hidden tang knives waiting to be finished and they're a LOT more work.

We'll get to handle material later, when the thing has been heat treated and everything. But it could be either standard handle slabs or a cordwrap. Or maybe something in leather? I don't know. Anything cool that would work with a fulltang knife.

And also add any details that you might like.

Once a lot of options are given by people....I'll combine the most populair options into a knife.

I'm really looking forward to hearing what you all would like to see and making something cool out of it.

Also I'll be keeping you guys up to date with pictures about the knife build.

an old nicholson file, 4" knife, D.H. Russell Boot Knife, http://www.grohmannknives.com/pages/r1s.html, hollow grind, I want to try and grind this knife next.  If you do it, then I can learn from your pictures.  :)  Vance

Hollow grind on that knife!

Allright, Rounded shape (like this)

or this

Or perhaps something with a finger groove type going on?

Or a coffin handle

Or more of a teardrop like what Jan was talking about

Or perhaps something more like a squarish mountain man handle like Craig suggested

Or if you feel that something else would be more suited let me know.

Pick a shape and I can start grinding

We were doing so well! If I can't get a similarity of a consensus on a handle shape.......I'll be cancelling the idea. I'd really like to get started on this knife but I can't profile out a blade unless I know what shape to make the handle.

But if I don't get more of a response then I'll have to conclude that the idea was a failure.

recurve or no recurve? This consensus thing isn't so easy I think.

Why not round off the blade of the average consensus to 4.5?  And you can't go wrong with a stag handle shaped to use in the traditional style.

Allright, looks like the majority vote so far is a Droppoint in Ow3 5,6mm steel.

Blade sizes I've seen mentioned so far:
3 1/2"
4" (3x)
4,5" (2x)
5" (2x)
5-6"

Now...I can either just take the average on that value (4,4") or we can try and get a consensus.

What size would you like on a droppoint blade?

Also, what kind of handle shape will we take. Because the suggestions I've seen so far are all over the place. And we'll need something of a consensus on it.

Or a deep belly drop point maybe 6inch, burl handle, lanyard hole, black pins, glassbreaker on back of handle?
