Bear & Son Cutlery

Peanut

2.75” closed

440 rust resistant blade steel

Rosewood scales

The person who recommended this .. based on the discriminating criteria I set forth i.e. size & scale matl .. stated they owned NO product from this manufacturer & kindly requested a review. What you’ll find here are opinions .. specifically, my opinion. Yours will differ. That said …..

At $14 retail .. this is a working knife. As such, it does not possess the fit-n-finish of the Case 61154 it is replacing.

Specifically, as I rub my fingers over it, there is one point that is not smooth .. where the scale meets the bolster on the left front .. when looking into the open knife. The bolster & liner were not ground coincident with one another at this point.

Also, the blade was not sharpened all the way to the heel of the blade. It stopped ~ 1/32” from where it should have.

The trailing edge of the “C” of the stamping .. BEAR MGC over USA .. has been lost & trails off the upper edge of the blade .. perhaps, lost in the final grinding.

In all fairness .. @ 3X the cost .. the Case does not possess 3X the fit-n-finish of the Bear product.

It arrived “factory sharp” .. as sharp as any production knife I’ve sourced stateside. The knives I source from off-shore are .. generally speaking .. sharper. Perhaps, it’s a liability issue .. don’t know on that one .. just an observation. I used a fine grit 2” X 4.5” hard Arkansas stone for sharpening. It was easy enough to improve the edge .. all the way to the heel of the cutting edge. How the edge stands up .. only time & use will tell. I will state that other models I own from Bear MGC hold an edge just fine.

If you require slick, shiny, & smooth .. spend more money. If you need something practical, durable, & dependable .. this’ll do the trick.

… just an opinion …

 Thanks, Jan !!!

Thanks folks !!!
@ Jan .. everything was tight. No undesirable blade movement of any sort. The blade was not "break a nail" stiff .. but walked & talked like it should. The only negative aspects were cosmetic .. as noted. 100% "Made in the USA". It's currently sitting beside a $120 Laguiole in Abby's purse .. and will undoubtedly .. see more use.
imo .... Bear Cutlery & Son makes some very good "users" !!!

Good eview, Dale.  I'm pretty sure that you can also correct some of the minor cosmetic problems like you did with the edge.

Dale,

That is some awesome information.  Its nice to know a good bang for the buck knife exists made in the USA.  I agree on the user aspect.  If your simply collecting, and dont get me wrong..ya'll know I am a collector,  Fit and finish are the very things you look at and require.  As a basic user, cost becomes a factor for me.  I want the knife to be tight without blade movement of any type but if I have to buff a few areas and run it on a stone...at this cost I am more than willing.  Let us know how it performs and did it meet the lovely ladies requirements?

Thanks for the review I appreciate it
