i haven't done any good carving in a while, and while sitting at a yard sale, i thought i would do some carving using my Rough Rider stockman knife. i carved a nice face in the cedar wood, but soon after i realized i had created a huge blister on my left thumb. i used my thumb to apply pressure to the spine of the knife while carving.
is there a way to avoid this? did i do something wrong while carving? any solution, or suggestion would be appreciated.
thanks guys,
Captain Jeff

Small elastic tape sold at pet stores can be wrapped around thumb or finger. Comes in small roll. About four bucks. Three or four wraps around finger or thumb will work.
well, i dont carve often. cant remember the last time i did some real carving. mostly just messing around. in high school i carved a wizzard face on a walking stick i made. it turned out really good, but i had a lot of help with it.
i think i may try out the glove thumb idea. i am also looking into an actual carving knife/chisel set. since its just a hobby, i will probably just start with the glove, and if i get into it, i will invest.
thanks!
You did better than me Jeff. I didn't get a blister but managed to cut myself. JJ's idea of an thumb cut from an old glove worked great, unfortunately I should have just worn the glove. LOL, thats just me
Jeff,
Blisters can be common when carving. Sometimes it's caused by holding the carving, others by holding the knife. Check out this link to Mountain Woodcarvers for some protective items, A simple finger guard could be all you need.
