Riley- In any event, we are merely guessing at the problem-- I, persomally, would not put that on the buyer. IMHO, take the knife back, give us some quality pictures (more than one) and we can possibly diagnose and correct the problem-- If it can be remedied, then you can sell it anew with no problems--
Riley- If it is the same Hen & Rooster you asked about here-http://iknifecollector.com/group/odds-ends/forum/topics/knife-i-nee... - The handle material is either stag or bone-Neither does not gas-- More likely, it is a carbon steel blade which can darken over time--- A metal polish like Flitz or a similar product will restore the shine-- Sometimes I use ultra fine sand paper (1200 grit and above) and then the metal polish, depending on the extent of the original condition of the blades which I can not see without photos- Darkening of the blades is natural for older carbon steel blades.
sounds like this knife or one stored close too it has gassed out. have seen quite a few examples of damage done by this. and typically it's just like you described, half greyed & half shiny.
Riley,
If is a celluloid handle and has started to gas, No. There is no way to undo the damage done by this chemical reaction. Many, many knives have had this happen
Riley can you post the pic in here for us to take a look at?
Riley, is this what he said...The celluloid handles are degraded and it has effected the metal?
