There is a lot of different exotic wooden knife scales out there from all over the world. There's burls, stripes, checks, well almost too many types to list. It seems almost every country has some type of wood that makes excellent knife handles. The question at hand is what is your favorite? If you have more than one, list them all. Please.

Love maccassar. Mostly from the East Indies, Sri Lanka, and Ceylon. It's generally a colorful ebony, and like other ebonies, it's hard, resinous, self-sealing and waxy with a fine grain. It makes a stunning, rich knife handle, takes a very bright polish, and is very durable and long lasting. :)
My all time favorite is Dessert Irion Wood but I am learning to like a lot of others. Two types of wood, I had never seen before, in person, is Lace wood and Purple Heart. I simply love them both. I have seen some Purple Heart, on line, and it looks more pink than purple. I have a piece that is real rich purple, it's so pretty.
Real pretty Alex.
Steve, I've seen Red Oak so hard that when it's dried, a chain saw could not hardly cut it. I plan on stabilizing some Red Oak soon, I can't wait to see the results.
Soooo many favourite.
The dark glossy finish of Ebony woods...
Or the brightness of Maple?
Or the complexness of a good burl?
Or maybe Snakewood?
Or the depth and history of a good Bog Oak block?
Or the red richness of Cocobolo?
The randomness of a nice Spalted wood? Too many to chose from. Let me picture a few of the nicer ones that I've worked with so far though.
Cocobolo it pretty nice:
So's Gabon ebony
Maybe you'd prefer some Maple Burl though?
Or like Steve said...some Oak can be really nice:
Especially when it's 4000 years old:
I really don't know how to pick a favourite though.
My opinion may of course change in the next day or two when my Talon in Che Chen Redwood turns up !
I also like the look of that Zebra Wood and I am going to have to get one soon. However at the moment African Blackwood is my favourite more for the way it feels in hand as much as how it looks. I heard it described as feeling "buttery" and that just about sums it up for me.
Well I don't have a knife made with this wood but I think my favorite hardwood is Zebrawood. I would love to make some knife handles with Zebrawood.
