have seen similar pieces like this on ebay before brian. can't recall what they called it. will dig a little deeper for you.
oh thank you. i have asked about it before, but not from any real collectors. mostly what ive heard was it was a cigar knife, but all the ones i have seen have the hole to put the cigar tip through to cut. any info would be much appreciated!
Brian, I apologize for the late response, but I have not found a definitive answer yet-- The handle shape closely resembles what is called a British "Farthing knife". However, they had an actual Farthing coin imbedded in the handle area, and usually a much smaller pen blade--- Still searching, just letting you know I was still searching.
hi john, i just realized a reply i sent never went through. i took it to an 'appraisal' today and didnt really learn much! the woman that appraised it sais it was probably from the late 1800s, face may be admiral lord nelson, crown was english, engraved design was indian, from english colonialization days, and that she thought it was more of a novelty knife maybe worth $30.
i dont know. i am just going to have to find a different appraiser that is willing to do a little legwork and come up with some specifics.
i really do appreciate your input.
i'll keep you posted.
