Hi Jack,

I see where you are directing folks to: caddyman1973@gmail.com for stiddys.  I have one I found on ebay, but what I need is a slackner, or information on where to find one.  If most folks make them, I could use some info on doing that.  Material to use, what thickness? do guys use more than one thickness?  Also, when shearing the pins of a folder, what's the best type of knife or blade to use?  Is there a real good you tube video I should look at?  Can a person shear stainless pins, or do you just punch them through?  I've sent you a friend request because you seem knowledgeable about folder repair.  Hope we can share ideas and information.

Mike.

Please understand that what I have passed on to you is the way I have torched stag. The heat required is not enough to impact the blade hardness and as you will notice on any knives that the stag was colored by heat it is always a lighter color near the bolsters & darkest as you get to the center of the handle.

Jack, I use a propane torch for stag and I do the torching after the handles are on the knife finished. I wet the handles one at a time with WD 40 and very carefully play the torch (low flame) over the handle until I get the desired effect I want. I would suggest you practice on some scrap pieces. After I am satisfied with the coloration I buff with a polishing compound (light pressure to the buffing wheel) to get a shine on them. I also use Simichrome polish for the final polish. Very little Simichrome and a lot of rubbing with a soft cloth. I use wash cloths. Please note that my first attempt was on a loose handle & it warped it beyond use. It could have been me but that was when I decided to try it after handle assembly to the knife. I have not tried it on a bone handle yet.
