Here are two hypothetical survival scenarios that should challenge your ingenuity:
(1) If you were going to buy the ultimate "bug out vehicle", what would it be? (Please specify the climate and terrain your vehicle must conquer on your bug out route.). Also, assuming you could buy only "off the shelf" options and accessories for it, tell us all the options and accessories it would have.
(2) OK, OK, I hear you! A bug out vehicle with only "off the shelf" options and accessories would be pretty lame, wouldn't it? So, what could you do to make it a "bug out BEAST?" In other words, what would your fantasy bug out vehicle (FBOB) be, and how would you equip it? (Hint: Assume total anarchy with no rules and regulations being enforced.)
Personally, I don't have a lot of experience with trucks or motor homes, but I would think a big ol' 4WD Suburban-style rig would be a good platform to start with. How about you?

The Suburban was what we used in Iraq as contractors. They were armored but they are very dependable.
I am no expert but from everything I read I think an old diesel class rv (class C) or a pre 1996 F250 diesel with a lance type trailer on the back would be my choice. Nothin fancy or too lavish but would want solar on roof.
My "bug out vehicle" would literary be a bug .. a VW based sandrail.
It's a proven design ..longest running manufacture & most (21,529,464 beetles produced) manufactured of any design platform. They'll go about anywhere and are tough as nails. Two people can lift the front end & jack it around if necessary .. 3 people (2 lg) for the back end to do same.
The military uses a VW based Chenowth design for their purposes.
I'd personally have something along the lines of what's pictured first. Nothing too exotic .. just std easy to find parts and proven reliability.
I'd suggest something closer to the Chenowth design for those who desire armament & a little more HP.
Love all the pics. I have seen Damnation Alley a long time ago. I love the sandrail! Never even thought of that. I'd have to figure a way to put two car seats in it though. :)
COOL, Dale! But I agree with John about the two seats. Also, an open cockpit design like this is not very practical for the Northwest where I live. I love the idea of the VW platform, though. Wish I had my old VW van. We took it to Alaska and it went everywhere there year 'round, even deeply rutted Jeep trails in the bush (not by my choice, however. My then teenage daughter and her boyfriend drove it in on some really bad Jeep trails without my knowledge, until she told me about it later. LOL) If the sandrail had two car seats and was enclosed, that would be ideal. In Anchorage about 1985, I remember seeing a VW beetle fitted with roll bars all around it like a bird cage. Very cool as a bug out vehicle.

I was interested in buying a Chenoweth about 10 years ago. I called them up. The salesman never returned my call...lol
