New guy checking in as requested.

For reasons I still don't know, I got the knife bug around 2007.  I picked up a couple of fixed blade kits, fooled around with them but never finshed them.  About a year and a half ago, I got one back out and finished it.  More accurately, I epoxied the scales to the tang and locktited the screws.  That gave me the impetus to grab a half a dozen folder kits and assemble them as Christmas gifts (including one for me as an EDC).

As is usually the case with me, some other fascination took hold and I went down another hobby path.

A couple of weeks ago the bug bit again.  I spent more time at the local gun show last weekend looking at the tables of individual knifemakers than I did the tables of firearms.  In a roundabout way, it led me here.  I spoke with the gentleman from Kousins Kustoms and picked up his card.  I did a google search for his website and found his page here.  I liked what I saw and signed up.

AFA collecting, my preference is fixed blades of 5" or less with scales of natural materials but I'm open to whatever looks good and catches my fancy.  I suppose I'm more of an accumulator than a collector...

FWIW, last night I brought out that second kit I bought in 2007.  I stacked the spacers and leather washers, attached the pommel and tightened it down.  Tonight I tried sanding it all down to get the spacers and washers even with the guard and pommel.  Turns out a 4" belt sander is a bit too wide....ooops!

Where do you get the kits?
Can you choose the steel type you want?

Welcome to The Facebook of Shanks!!! :)
I've ordered from Texas Knifemaker Supply and Jantz. I also picked up some stuff from Jantz at the Tulsa show in Nov of 07 IIRC.

I don't recall any kits where you could choose your steel type but then again I've slept since the last time I looked. Plus, I did my best to stay out of the high rent district as well...

Thanks for the welcome!
Welcome again Andrew.
Only made one kit knife, years ago. CVA Trade Knife, I've used it for notching cedar fence posts to filleting catfish.
Might have to look in to your 2 sources and give it a go again.

Nice trade knife there J.J.! I've never gotten into any re-enacting but I do have a thing for patch knives. What's one more oddball quirk in my collecting habits? LOL!

I have the hots for a Finn puukko right now as well but I haven't been able to find any kits. Probably for the best right now.
Yeah, Andrew- that bug bits pretty hard, doesn't it? As soon as you think we're well, it itches again :)
welcome Andrew! iKC is great, and you will learn alot from the members here.
i got the "bug" a year ago when i wanted a fixed blade knife, but could afford to buy one. after watching many YouTube vids, and other sources, i decided to make my own. ive been making knives for my friends and coworkers ever since. i just recently began selling my knives on the Internet, and Ebay. i really enjoy it!

i buy most of my blades from www.premiumknifesupply.com they have some great blades at great prices. they also sell on ebay.

Keep at it!
Hopefully this works, it's the stock pic. I thought I had a pic of mine but I don't.
