Came across a Duck N Deer brand knife at hardware store today. Never saw tat beans before which got me wondering, do you buy one brand only, one style only or get an unknown knife just to have representative of that company ?

Price is always a factor for me.  That and company reputation. If I come across a brand I've never heard of then I'm more likely to second guess the knife.

I also take plenty of notes and I keep them handy and make them available online at my website "A Pocket Guide to Knives"

As for coming across an unknown brand and buying it?  If i can handle it first and ask questions, then i'm more likely to pop on the item but again the price will be the deciding factor.   If it is an online purchase, then I will normally do research and come back to it.  I've come to the conclusion that there is absolutely nothing Unique, one of a kind, or hard to get on eBay!  I've also come to realize, that the second or third time you see the item, it will almost always be less expensive!

The  formula for a regret puyrchace  is

Flashy X Impulse X  Price = regret

The formula for a happy purchase is

Price + Research + patience = happy

How about if someone just buys a knife because they like the looks of it? I just purcahsed a Cold Steel Kudu because I like the ring lock, the Kudu shield, and the looks of it. Never bought a Cold Steel product or a Ring Lock style knife. I just liked the looks of this particular knife. How do you justify it? LOL That like asking how do you justify a pice of chocolate cake or a new shirt. Who says you have to justify anything?  LOL

Thanks for the great discussion. Always wonderful to have differing opinions with a common interest.

Chuck, that make perfect sense.  Don't the psychiatrists always talk about breaking out of your shell and trying new things?

Chuck, very good point.

Well for me is just like Chuck said....I like it, [so if I have the funds and that is the other part], I will buy it....

That is what it is to be a Collector...I have all sorts and styles of knives...and I have bought them cause of 2 things..

1- Do I like it

2-Is the price right

The rest follows, will I use it, is it a safe queen, will I profit from it later on...

Usually I just purchase cause I like it....That is my Justification....

Indian,

Some would say that what you are is an "accumulator"   A collector focus on value, quality, the potential to increase in worth over time.   Of course that would also make me an accumulator, and one of the worst kind! LOL

OK Ok...so I am PACK RAT....but I like it!!!!.... my animal helper is the Raven...so I like all shiny objects with a Point ...Drop Point preferably ....lol

Accumulator/ collector. TomAto Tomahto.  LOL  As long as you gain more knives who cares what they call me?  Pack Rat?? That's OK too!

Yeah, there is a fine line between accumulating and collecting.

But it is truly hard to collect without accumulating.  I think the key is when buying do so with an "Informed Qualified Focused Justification"

I'm not sure what that means but it sounds better than "because I wanted it!"

Wife: Why in the world did you buy another knife?

Husband: Because I wanted it!  (Husband gets with rolling pin)

Wife: Why in the world did you buy another knife?

Husband: Well Dear, I looked at my expanding and masterful collection and after a long and thoughtful informed qualified focused internal debate I felt justified in adding it to the collection. (With luck she'll hesitate long enough that you can dodge the rolling pin!)

I'm very, very focused. I only buy knives.

I am surely an accumulator - I buy if I like and feel I will enjoy it - and I like to use it to, but I have a few I will not use.

Toby - funny with the Husband and Wife dialoge. My wife sometimes shakes her head but she is happy if I buy a knife that I want - or knives as usually the case.
