Hello everyone i am new to this forum and looking for some help i have a mint condition case xx knife hatchet combo with a patent date of Oct 22 1935 it has a walnut handle i believe . I think its a model 561. Anyone know anything about this?, i know its rare and worth alot.

Craig, okay here goes- 1) the handle IS walnut 2)  it is a 61 pattern knife/hatchet combo (sometimes called a knife/axe combo)  3) It was available in genuine stag #561, onyx celluloid #961, and walnut like yours #161  4) There is a little discrepancy as to the date, depending on what noted knife source you believe- Most knife guides and also Shirley Boser, Case Historian state that the Case's Tested XX stamp was only used from 1938-40. However, Goin's Encyclopedia Of Cutlery Markings lists that stamp as being used 1940-1950. Personally, I would go with the majority and go with the 1938-40 date. BTW, the #61 combo first appeared in Case's catalogue in 1938 and the pattern discontinued in 1967, although remaining inventory still appeared in their 1968 catalogue. 5)Your set is very valuable- Although stag is probably the most desirable, all of the handle materials seem to sell in the same price range- In slightly used to excellent condition, they sell in the $400-600+ range- Yours, being mint, would definitely fall in the high end of that range.

You will get the hang of it before too long. When you post a pick choose the box right next to the word... link...Its called Image and it will open a browse screen on your computer. If you are on an iPad or other device it opens the camera roll or whatever you call your pictures. Pick what you want and watch it load! when done click ...add reply.. and wal la pictures!

 I know this is an old conversation, but wanted to add the fact Case first made these sets around 1900, and these are the short lever models. In and around 1935 Case began making the longer lever style which was essentially the same other than the lever. I have a latter set as well as the earlier model. My Pat# 1935 XX combo is in near mint unused condition and also has it's original box. These deluxe sets came with the flare head hatchet as this one has.  (Not the Pumpkin box as they never came that way.) My pre-35 set is in good condition and it has the short locking lever. I once owned about fifty of these combos, and don't ask me why because I don't know why! I just like them I guess. I think these combo sets are pretty cool, and one of Case's many successes due to their high standards.
