When I was looking into getting a tattoo I read an awesome book that goes into detail everything about the physics of it up to the emotional aspect of getting a tattoo. Now the one thing that stood out to me was...if you don't like someones tattoo...don't say anything about it, comment on how the colors really pop or the lines are really straight or something...not "wow, why did you get snoopy tattooed on your arm? that's dumb"
Lee and I were discussing this a while back (my fiance) that maybe this should be the same for knives as well. Some people don't know that the crappy knock-off they got at the pawn shop will break in 2 months, or that liner lock is so thin that it could snap at any moment...
They probably bought that knife because they liked it or it had some sort of meaning to it.
This is true Wilma. I quit a well paying job to chase my dreams of becoming a tattoo artist. Through the years it took some practice when it came to me keeping my mouth shut about my views on other artists work and the choice of the customers own tattoo. Even though I did custom pieces like faces etc. with great detail , it didn't give me the right to make a negative comment to the customer about their decision of placing a Charlie Brown or Snoopy on their body. Any type of collection, be tattoo, knife, gun or whatever is personal to the collector and can cause you to get your feelings hurt at the least. Rule of thumb--If you don't like someones collection,,, just keep your mouth shut .
as someone who has A LOT!!! of tattoos i will say picking a tattoo is just like picking a blade it is all about what suits that person and their personality. a big man doesnt need a dainty stiletto he needs a cold steel spartan or rahja or even the espada.
I've got hundreds of knives (mostly throwers) and only 5 tattoos, BUT 1 tat is a sexy lady holding a dirk, 1 is comic book lady Razor holding 2 sword like knives, 1 is a throwing knife with an American Eagle flying across the handle with IKTHOF (International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame) down the blade, and 1 is a photo turned pencil drawing of a friend as he throws a knife at the 2005 World Championships.
My 5th tat is the American Flag with an eagle over it holding a banner saying "Knife Thrower".
So, I guess I'd say they are both highly personal choices and wouldn't say anything unkind about either unless asked by a friend for advice. And then with a tat I'd tread lightly on their feelings.
I would go for an old tang stamp.... like Double Duck knives or the "half moon" style Schrade Cut. Co. something that is no longer used.
There are some really tang stamps out there from companies that may have only existed a very short time or early stamps from companies that still exist but are not used anymore... OH!!! the Boker tree would be cool.
totaly agree. I collect what I like and that pretty much is anything thats sharp. Autos are my faverite. And you catch quite a few [comments] when you tell people . Low end knife's can be quite kool to. Some are knockoffs others are just plain weird. But like a tattoo, If I like it thats all that matters.
I would agree Steve, My motto: "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say nothing at all" That being said a person can always find something good to say if asked! My favorite knives are Trapper's and Muskrat's and I really like Older Schrades and prefer "Old Timer's" and "Uncle Henry's" but I have quit a few different brands, but IMHO there is not a crappy knife. Some are not made as well as others but IMO they all serve a purpose. I look at someones knife and always find something good to say. If I see a safety issue then I would for sure bring it up or if its a newer knife that I have read about safety issues I would send them a copy of it. Speaking of Tattoo's I'm Chickasaw/Choctaw Indian and I'm planning getting one or two. The first one would be a Tribal headband with two Red Eagle Feathers hanging down my shoulder area and in each feather putting my grandmothers name and the other my grandfathers name(Grandpa is Choctaw - Grandma is Chickasaw Indian) and the other shoulder area I want a Case 5 Blade Beast Trapper Knife with Burnt Stag Handles and have my Grandkids name's placed in each open blade. I'm very proud of my grandkids and proud of my Indian Heritage.
I have been into knives sense i was very young.
My first knives were ones that were given to me,but as i got older and could afford to by my own knives i made choices based on many factors. early years price was often the major factor.
Now its more manufacturer reputation for quality and personal preference.
