I love Canoes, is that a Corelon handle?
Robert, yes it is corelon.
I have an original Hen and Rooster on order. The bolster is engraved and the handle scales have real schrimshaw. Both are initial by the craftsman. I broke the bank on this one. HaHa...I can't wait to get it. Billy, what is Corelon, from what I gather it is a real step up from other synthetic handle materials.
From what little info I can gather, it is just a synthetic celluloid product. I believe it is a step up from the older celluloids that have a gassing off problem sometimes even though it could still be flammable if exposed to enough heat. It would probably just melt.
While Michael Prater uses Corelon extensively, the word is a regestered TM of Jim Frost. It is not celluloid From my Lexicon:
Corelon: An acrylic resin used in the production of knife handles and scales. Corelon was developed by and is is a registered trademark of Frost Cutlery. Frost uses the material on Hen & Rooster as well as other brand names they currently own. Aside from the brands they own, Frost also uses Corelon scales for Knives made by W. R. Case & Sons and sold exclusively through Cutlery Corner Network. Frost injects the acrylic resin with a wide variety of colors in order to simulate Coralline Rock which is made from andsnamed after the algae of the same name. Corelon was first used in December, 2001 Trademark was applied for July, 2004 and granted July 2006.
Hope this helps
Wow, thanks Tobias, I know the knives with Corelon seem very pretty maybe prettier than other synthetic's. I don't have many knives with man made type handles but I am starting to get a few and I just don't know much about all the different type handles.
This is one of my new/old German knives I have gotten lately. It's from 1975-80 when Mr. AG. Russell owned the company. The engraved bolster are initialed by the craftsman, H.L. and the scrimshaw handles are initialed by the craftsman A.H...This is one sweet knife, in outstanding condition and the fit and finish great. It has become one of my favorites in my collection.
That is very nice, Robert.
That is truly an impressive beauty Robert. User or collection piece?
