Bernard Levine's book is the best place to get a run down on the history and names of patterns; "Levine's Guide To Knives And Their Values"

Craig, you have provided Charles with some excellent advice and recommendations. Especially Levine's Guide to Knives 4th Edition. I know you have one because I recently read a comment you had made about that specific book that was posted online.

When was the last time you tried to buy one? Or even find one! The few that I have been able to locate are going for anywhere between $300 and $900 on eBay! I have literally scoured the So. California area, searching through every used book store within a 25 mile radius of where I live. Nothing. Zero, zip, zilch, nada! I would love to have a copy myself! So, if you have any ideas on where I could find a 4th edition, I am all ears!

18 used from $58.54  Is it worth $58 - $100? I think so! I'm always going through it. There's SOOO much information in it, I'd be lost without mine.

Ah yes, but those are all the 5th Edition which Mr. Levine personally discourages anyone from purchasing since he had already parted ways with the publishing company before it went to press. He had almost nothing to do with any edition after the 4th and much of what was in the 4th was omitted from the later publications. Sadly a 4th Edition is currently going for anywhere between 300 to 900 dollars on eBay. That's the one I'm attempting to find for UNDER $100.

knife books.... finally a great topic... and to answer the original questions even some of my most basic knife books have at least the first 50 basic knife patters in them but with some companies through history developing and patenting over 500 different patterns just to their own companies name... that would be tough.

the best place really is found in seperate pieces.not all gathered... old knife ads,vinatge catalogs...ectect...where the exact pattern name and what material and size it was is listed.

AND RON!!! DONT WORRY one day youll do what always happens to me with books do and you'll just be digging around and ole book store sale and find your copy.dont forget libratries and yard slaes...i found almost all my books..one box..yard sale!..came home and sold one bok and broke even and i had doubles of that one!!.. everyting in that box from long hual book to blacie clling making knives books!...loved that find!... SPEAKING OF BOOKS SEE MY NEW POST..but i have to edit it!... so many foks are not book savy and are so worried about buying that next blade instead of -GETTING BOOKS,LEARNING-then buy!
