The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
Over the last week I acquired 4 blade blanks for customization. The materials they use for their "S" line of products are 440C, manufactured in China.
The ones I selected are pictured below:
The top one will definitely receive a Stag taper handle, the Guthook blank will receive a Purpleheart Wood scales w/ Pink liners(for the younger niece). The bottom 2 are to be more detail specific in the handle materials. I would like some ideas on the materials for those, but keep in mind my skill level when making those suggestions. Novice.
Part Deux:
The knife Fairy brought these to me Tuesday:

I just have to find someone willing to buy it.
First things first.
Prompted by your query as to whether you should sell this latest creation, I just went back to page one and re-read this thread in its entirety.
Let me tip my hat and thank you, Brad, for the amazing journey you have shared with us this past year. Starting in January with the acquisition of 4 blade blanks your knifemaking evolution could be likened to that of a caterpillar transforming itself into a beautiful butterfly.
Thank you, my friend, for allowing me to be an observer, as well as a participant, in your metamorphosis!
Now, regarding your question: "Should I sell this last one?"
My very short and to the point answer is an emphatic, NO!
I would never be able to part with that gorgeous knife! It would be like selling one of my children. One of my most beautiful children, at that!
Just looking at that deliciously blond olivewood handle elicits a profound response from my salivary gland. Everything about that knife screams, "KEEP ME!"
And, bear in mind, I'm just a random guy out here in cyberland looking at a photograph of this hunk of Man Candy on steroids. You, my friend, are the skilled surgeon that breathed life into this baby. How could you possibly think of selling it?
If this were my knife I would make a really cool leather lanyard for it. And then I would attempt to find a sheath that would compliment and complete this fantastic creation. That's what I would do if I had made this knife.
So, no! That would be my final answer.
Brad, what you are asking is a somewhat a personal dilemma for you. I like, Ron, have seen your progression into a maker of quality customs. Believe me, if you choose to sell them, there will be buyers. On a personal note, you have seen the handful of customs that I have made. I never intended to sell them and even refused to sell them based on my own perceived flaws in them..My feelings were-- If only I can make one better ( the perfect knife),-- In reality, that will just NEVER happen for me or anyone else- (The perfect knife does not exist).--- However, even though I never actively pursued selling any of them, I have been offered several hundred dollars per knife, been offered trades for Damascus hawks, etc.-- Even ticked some people off when I refused to sell them. Bottom line is, if you choose to sell them, they will be sold. If you choose not to, I can relate to that as well.
Ron & John,
Thank you both for your kind words.
But, in order to keep producing customized knives I need to buy materials.
I am not a greedy man, I could let this knife go for less than a eighty and I wouldn't think twice about doing it. That would cover my costs for materials for another project or 2.
I either cannot find or did not post this picture of another Premium Knife blade I handled in Suriname Snakewood. I think I didn't post it because the end result was less than spectacular(great but not "spectacular"). It made it's way out to Colorado to serve my bother in law Dave. They finally remembered to send me a picture of it in use, cutting up a Deer hindquarter.
Well it came out looking sweet! What did he think of it? It looks like it is using well.
Well, for what it's worth, if I had done that handle i would definitely be calling it spectacular. I think it looks amazing, Brad! Don't sell yourself short, my friend. That is one mighty fine looking handle on that knife, IMO.
There was some splintering of the wood around the tubes. I had bought the blank with the intention of sending it to him anyway. He called me instead of responding to a facebook message to scream "YES, I want that knife!"
LOL, he certainly did want it then
