The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
I first posed this question in the Case Fans group but I feel it probably belongs here.
I've been told that removing a knife from clam packaging does not de-value the knife. In fact older knives still in clam packaging can be damaged from the gases released from the packaging being exposed to light or just stored. (similar to the way old celluloid handles used to gas out).
I've been told you're better off removing the knife form the packaging. If you want you can always keep the card stock but it really will not add to the value unless it was something unique.
Obviously leaving it in the packaging is about 95% proof positive that the knife has not been used but it really doesn't guarantee the knife has not been damaged from stroage (I say 95% because some packaging can be opened and re-sealed.)
What is the consensus of the day?

Great question because there are two schools of thought and there may be even more. I personally leave a few in, others I do take out and try to save the backing. Not sure its important but I guess as info, maybe some one will care down the road.
The package is autographed, then what?
Is the autograph worth more than the packaged knife? If it is, leave it alone. Autographs decrease in value if altered which includes packaging. If the autograph is on say, a tin box then it wouldn't hurt anything. But a clam package can cause problems over years. The best thing would be to get an opinion from a dealer in that person's autograph and then you can make a better decision as to how to proceed.

Well the package is the plastic kind that Tobias is talking about. The guys at SMKW all signed it.
Robert, in that case I'm might just hang it as it is. I doubt the autograph is going to go up int value but it is a sentimental thing. It's like a Jim Frost signed sheath. He is no "Bo Randall"
In any case, I'm just talking about the run of the mill knife in clam packaging.
It's that Turtle Man Knife I won, the shell is all singed by soon to be over, Guys at SMKW. I love to put my hands on it but I just don't know what to do.
Robert, Send it to me. I know what to do! LOL
One day....maybe......lol
