A large single blade with pearl slabs, each pinned twice. Four hours worth of cleaning to get it to look this way and I guess it was made...Well, I'm not sure. There is only one tang stamp, 'SOLINGEN'. Nothing else. So, was it made before the 'Tariff' of 1891 or was it made to sell in Germany? Did anybody carry a knife this size? 5 1/2" closed and pearl? OK, my idea: A 'Sabbath' bread knife for the Jewish faith. The Hebrew characters have long since been 'removed'. Not there or even a trace when I got it, and if it dates to the early 30's no knife company would want to be associated so it was only marked with the location. How am i doing??

Craig-Overall, pretty much right on the.money. It is a travel Challah knife-( Judaic bread knife). These were popular in the 1920's -early 1930's.That is a pretty standard size for those knives. These were also made in Bohemia (Czech Republic) and in Japan. The lack of a manufacturer brand may or may not have been because of the sentiments of the time. Here is a set of 3 from Karlsbad, Bohemia (Czech Republic) from the 1920's.They have the words "Holy Sabbath" in Hebrew on the handles. The middle one is handled in bone, the other 2 in MOP.

What interesting knives !

Thanks John,

Your pics are fantastic. It's been awhile since I've seen one of these and now I make the connection. I appreciate your reply.

Craig

Craig,

What a beautiful knife!  A darn shame someone removed the letters, I know the thought process behind it for the time frame but the knife lost a piece of its history :(

Craig has posted more pics of this knife HERE
