Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

I have a mid-70's trapper here but I can't tell exactly how many dots there are.  I am hoping one of you experts could tell just by looking at the placement of the dots.  Any takers?

PS  I cross posted this on another forum.  Hope that's ok.

Kind regards,

I believe there should be one more dot to the right of the A. and if all the other dots are on the left that we cant see then I would assume you have a 1978!

looking at the pic, all you see is 3 dots..1977.....the knife should open to see all the dots...otherwise, I would definitely worry about it's originality...so as you know during this era...10 dot is a 70 and subtract one away for each year...It looks by the picture it has been cleaned extremely showing the heated metal meld below the tang stamp letters also, this may just be the photo...but I have seen quite a few...that way. Good luck in counting the dots!

do they show better in the half open position?

Sue and Brent, I'm going to respectfully disagree.  In the early years of the dot system, many patterns had dots hidden behind the bolsters.  Canoes are great examples of this.  Case usually centers their dots and sometimes tightens up the spacing as more dots are added.  If it were only a three dot, I would expect them to end about in the middle or end of the "A".

Tobias, that's the best I could get.  The more I open or close it, the more the dots disappear.  At the half open position, it looks like a USA.

Just looking at the position of the dots, and if they are centered as they usually are, there are more dots hidden.  But how many?!  AAAGGGHHH!

I will look at my 10 dot and my four dot and try to do some deducing.  Is the dot under the "S" right underneath?

Okay, my 4 dot Ike has them even spaced under the USA, My six dot Sod Buster Jr. also has them evenly spaced all under the USA.  My 10 dot has them run in a straight line from end to end, centered under the USA.  Depending on if the the left dot is centered under the "S" I'd say it it is either five or six dot.

Heavens no, Handmade, being quiet is for the dead!  Conversation and comments are always appreciated.  And thanks for the suggestion.  I hadn't considered contacting Case directly.

Probably a six dot. May be a five dot. Probably not a four dot. Definitely not a three dot. I think if it were a seven dot they would go further to the right. So I bet on six.

Well Steve, you wrote the book! So I'd say you'd have an educated guess!

Thanks so much everyone for the replies.  Max, I called the Case historian and Steve, I was actually reading your book when your reply came through.  I love this site.
