Well, having lived with dogs all my life and growing up in a kennel I guess I can give you my view but it's really a "vague" subject.

A puppy is basically like a blank paper, it was "made" and carries some qualities with it which would be the genepool but how it will end up is entirely up to you.

Most owners have a view of the kind of dog they want and they will try to reach that goal which will influence the dogs development and temperament.

If you live in a family with ten kids poking at it constantly and teasing it then you most likely will have a nervous wreck of a dog. Any puppy inherently mimics and learn from the actions of the leader of the pack (you), whether you are stressed and give off hormones and snap at it, it will have it's own results.

Whether you can maintain your cool mind regardless of the situation then you will most likely have a collected and calm dog that looks at you and reacts accordingly to how you trained it and how you behave.

So just like a blank sheet of paper you write what you want to write and remove what you want to remove, sure the genes will always be there, especially with the "working" breeds and ones bred for a specific purpose.

Whether you will succeed or not depends on how well you know dog psychology, how to read, teach and correct a dog.

But one thing is always guaranteed, dogs are pack animals and they always look up to the leader so whatever you do during the day will influence the dog in some way. Dogs aren't stupid, if you set a schedule for when to walk then it won't come when it knows it's not time because most likely you would correct him/her, but you can be darn sure it will yank your ass out of that sofa when it's time to leave for a walk.

Any small habits regardless of the impact will influence the dog and eventually turn it into the personality it reaches as an adult.

For beginners it's hard to know just how a dog thinks and some even go to the lengths of treating them like humans which is probably the worst thing one can do. Their senses are arranged in a completely different order compared to us. When we feel stressed we release hormones and chemicals that the dog picks up on, when we feel sad we also create a similar reaction as well as when we're happy.

It's all about what you do with your dog that decides how it will grow up, the genes are only a tiny bit of the package that is an adult dog.

Dale,

That too is a good lookin' dog

well said halicon;a dog can read you as much as you can it.it has always been follow the leader.just make sure your the leader...

... or @ the very least .. flip it over !?!

.. between you 'n Chris .. I'll end up with a flatter abrasive surface .. one way or the other .. :D

that "rock" of yours looks like a very used bar of soap...  you need to find the closest lake and see how many times that will skip over the water. then you can get a new one.
